Choosing the Right Diluent

Bacteriostatic water vs. sterile water — why the choice isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Why Diluent Choice Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

As covered in Reconstitution Basics, bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent for most lyophilized research peptides because its benzyl alcohol content inhibits bacterial growth after mixing. But “standard” isn’t the same as “universal.” Some protocols call for plain sterile water instead, and knowing why that distinction exists — rather than defaulting to bacteriostatic water automatically — is part of reading a compound’s documentation properly rather than working from memory.

When Documentation Specifies a Different Diluent

  • Follow the specific instruction: a product’s Certificate of Analysis or label takes precedence over a general default
  • Some formulations are diluent-sensitive: certain compounds or delivery formats call for a diluent other than bacteriostatic water
  • Volume and concentration matter too: diluent choice is only one variable — how much is added affects the resulting concentration
  • When in doubt, don’t guess: if documentation is unclear, that’s a question for the manufacturer or your institution’s protocol, not an assumption to make
