Building a Research Watchlist

Turning occasional reading into a simple, ongoing habit for tracking the compounds you care about.

Make the Databases Come to You

Rather than periodically searching from scratch, most of the databases covered earlier in this path let you set up standing alerts. PubMed and Google Scholar both offer free saved-search alerts that email you when a new paper matching a compound name or keyword is indexed. ClinicalTrials.gov lets you save a search and check back on status changes. Setting a handful of these up for the compounds you follow turns tracking research activity into something that happens automatically in the background, instead of a task you have to remember to do.

A Simple Watchlist Routine

  • Pick specific search terms: the compound’s name plus common synonyms, so alerts don’t get flooded with unrelated results
  • Set alerts on 1–2 databases: a PubMed or Google Scholar alert is usually enough to catch new peer-reviewed activity
  • Log what you find: a simple running note of date, source, and one-line takeaway is more useful later than relying on memory
  • Revisit periodically: checking trial status changes every few months catches things a one-time search would miss
