Where to Track Real Research Activity

The public databases that actually show what’s happening in the literature — and how to read what they’re telling you.

Primary Literature Databases

The most reliable way to see what’s actually happening with a compound is to go to the same sources researchers use. PubMed, maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, indexes the vast majority of peer-reviewed biomedical literature and is free to search. ClinicalTrials.gov, run by the NIH, is the public registry where clinical trials are required to post their design, sponsor, phase, and status. Between the two, you can see both what’s been published and what’s currently being formally studied — which is a very different picture than what shows up in a general web search.

Where to Look, and What Each Source Tells You

  • PubMed / MEDLINE: peer-reviewed papers — search by compound name to see publication volume and recency
  • ClinicalTrials.gov: registered trial status (recruiting, active, completed, terminated), phase, and sponsor
  • Preprint servers (e.g. bioRxiv, medRxiv): early-stage work posted before peer review — useful for spotting emerging questions, but not yet vetted
  • Google Scholar: broader coverage and citation counts, plus free alerts for new papers matching a search term

Read the Metadata, Not Just the Headline

A trial listing or paper carries information beyond its title. On ClinicalTrials.gov, check the phase, the current status, and whether results have actually been posted — a trial can be registered for years without ever reporting results. On PubMed, check whether a paper is a primary study, a review, or a case report, since each carries different weight. And on a preprint server, remember the work hasn’t been through peer review yet, so treat it as a lead to watch rather than a settled finding.
